Artist-in-Residence Program Brightens South Grove

South Grove Elementary School recently hosted John DiNaro as an artist-in-residence.

South Grove Elementary School recently hosted John DiNaro as an artist-in-residence.

DiNaro is an accomplished artist, specializing in creative wood sculptures. He visits many schools to guide students in a creative collaboration and create large wood sculptures. DiNaro worked closely with Diane Gregov, South Grove’s art teacher, to envision the theme and location for the wood sculptures.

Over the course of a week, every student in the school made a contribution to the project, gaining the real-world experience of being involved in a large project that benefits everyone.

With the completion of the artist-in-residence project, the reading nook in the library has been transformed with a huge wooden mural. Additionally, wooden benches that depict famous paintings were built and painted for the library and main lobby.

The project also benefited the all-purpose room in the annex with several colorful wooden mural panels. This enriching and productive experience was supported through a collaboration of the PTA, Compact for Learning team and student government.
