Baylis Students Explore the Magic of Magnets

Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Learning Center educator visits elementary school students.

Fourth-graders at J. Irving Baylis Elementary School in the Syosset Central School
District participated in a special hands-on lesson with magnets on Nov. 12.

Michele Theroux, an educator from the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Learning Center, visited students to conduct “Magnets to Go,” which explained magnets and electromagnetism to students in an engaging environment to supplement their regular classroom curriculum.

The students participated in three experiments, which allowed them to gain a better understanding of their science unit on electricity and magnetism. In the first experiment, fourth-graders tested a range of metal objects to determine which were magnetic and which were non-magnetic.

The second activity enabled students to explore and observe the properties of attraction and repulsion of magnets by using a plastic cylinder. In the final experiment, students generated electricity with magnets. After each of the
experiments, Theroux discussed and explained the results.

Prior to the in-school activity, all of the students visited the BNL Science Learning
Center, where they had an opportunity to explore energy, test out magnetized levitation and discover conductivity in a variety of objects.
