Camhi Makes A Lot of Racquet

Junior leads Syosset girls tennis into LI title defense.

Tennis has always been a part of Hannah Camhi's life. The child of parents who met on a tennis court, she grew up around the game.

Syosset High School's No. 1 singles player has had a racquet in her hands since she was 4 years old. Camhi speaks fondly of her first memories with her family on the tennis court.

"We always played at a park every week," Camhi recalled. "That's how I got really interested in it."

That interest has blossomed into incredible skill. She was an integral part of last year's Long Island championship, and the Braves will try to defend that title next week after winning the Nassau County title last Friday. Camhi's success is a testament not only to her tennis abilities, but also her experience playing on the varsity team. The junior has done so since the eighth grade.

"It was the greatest social experience," Camhi said of playing varsity so young. "It was also confidence-building. It just made me feel good walking in this school and knowing I was the best."
