Dwyer's Five Assists Lead Garden City Over Syosset

A 5-1 third quarter makes the difference in opener for both teams.

Garden City assist artist Devin Dwyer tends to underscore his importance. So it's best not to ask him or even head coach Steve Finnell about his skills.

Just go to the competition - most recently Syosset head coach John Calabria.

"He kind of had his way," Calabria said of the sophomore, who fed half of his team's goals in the Trojans' 10-5 season-opening home win over the Braves Wednesday. "We knew about him. But that's how good he is."

Dwyer assisted on three of Tom Gordon's four goals as the Trojans broke away with a 5-1 third quarter. Garden City wasted no time taking advantage of a Dylan Gordan slashing penalty early in the third, scoring just 22 seconds later, Gordon getting the tally off a pass from Patric Berkery. From there, the floodgates opened.

Rob Savage picked up an unassisted goal less than a minute later, and Dwyer followed by setting up Gordon for an 8-4 lead. Syosset's Ryan Hunter tried to stem the tide with an unassisted goal, but the Dwyer/Gordon combo got together again, giving Garden City a 9-5 edge with 3:26 left in the third.

"When you're out there dodging and looking for Tom, he gets open and it's a great feeling," Dwyer said.
