Face-Off Time for the Syosset Middle School Hockey Club

Spring season is wrapping up for the Syosset Middle School Hockey Club.

Spring hockey takes place between April and June, and is a prelude to the regular September to March season.  The club is open to Syosset students – boys and girls in grades 5 to 7.  Fourth grade hockey players are also eligible to join the club as practice players.

Typically the team practices once a week with various drills to help improve their skills, and often ends practice with a fun scrimmage.  Games are played against other local middle school hockey teams.

Currently there are 21 kids on the roster and another 15 or so kids registered as practice players who do not yet meet the age eligibility to join the team. For the younger athletes, signing up as practice players allows them to get involved with the Syosset Middle School hockey club.  It also gives the team coaches a chance to meet and get to know local kids that may join the regular middle school team when they reach 6th grade.

The Syosset Hockey Club also offers a mentoring program, where Syosset High School seniors on the varsity team help out during middle school hockey practices. The middle school players enjoy racing against the older high school players.

It lets me get better versing kids that have more experience," said a younger player. "They’re quicker and you have to be more alert.”

The high school volunteers earn community service credit for their volunteer work.

Thanks go out to the Syosset Hockey Club managers and coaches for the many years and tireless hours they’ve donated to ensure that Syosset kids have the ability to play hockey locally. For more information visit www.syosset-braves.org
