Hankin plans to speak nationally about education; Board sends official well wishes.

Well wishes from the board and details of Dr. Carole Hankin's retirement were released Wednesday, one day after the board announced the superintendent's departure.

It was revealed that the 23-year leader of Syosset School District plans to explore public speaking, work with educators and parents, and compile a book on public education.

"Dr. Hankin has been invited to work and speak nationally about the new and serious issues in education and to appear on national television to discuss some of these issues," said the announcement.

In her work in the public eye, she said she hopes to "help find positive solutions for the future of education by utilizing her educational experience to bring together groups of educators and parents throughout the country to work towards solutions."

Hankin will also write a book detailing the "inside story of suburban public schools, the emphasis on information testing, helping parents navigate their child's education, working with administrators and teachers, and the most interesting aspects of her career."

Her written work will highlight the many integral roles of a school system, from parents to administrators, teachers to community members.

She also plans on working with lower performing school districts to introduce them to some of Syosset's best educational practices.

The Board also officially weighed in on Hankin's retirement.

"As a Board, we will proceed thoughtfully and diligently while keeping the needs of all of our students and families first and foremost in our minds," the letter assured, adding, "The excellence in education that has become the trademark of the Syosset School District will continue unabated."

The board did not specify who will replace Hankin, as the announcement of her departure only came Tuesday night. The Board noted the "enormity of the responsibility" that would come with selecting Hankin's successor.

In the meantime, the Board said they wished Hankin "the very best in her future" and thanked her for "her leadership and genuine concern for each and every student and faculty member within our district."
