Honor Society Inducts New Members

Syosset High School's National Honor Society Thalian Chapter inducts new members.

Syosset High School’s National Honor Society Thalian Chapter inducted 304 new
members on Nov. 21 in two separate ceremonies that highlighted the society’s five pillars – knowledge, character, scholarship, leadership and service. Both ceremonies recognized the students’ academic excellence and lifelong commitment to success.

Students must possess a GPA of 90 or above and participate in at least two extracurricular activities to be eligible for induction into the NHS.

NHS chapter adviser Beth Waschitz and Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante congratulated the new members on their achievement of joining such a prestigious organization.

Reva Abrol, president of Syosset’s NHS, shared several examples of the activities NHS members participate in throughout the school and local community. She emphasized the society’s pillars and their importance in students’ everyday lives.
Executive board members Adam Hornick, Douglas Gliner, Joann Kong and Sylvie Durlacher discussed each pillar in greater depth and lit a candle representing each of them, a tradition in the honor society.

Students crossed the stage as Ms. Waschitz announced their names, receiving a certificate and congratulatory handshakes from Abrol and Dr. Durante.

The ceremony also included performances by the chamber orchestra, under the direction of Stephanie Merten, whose selections throughout the evening included Soon Hee Newbold’s “Fire Dance” and Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto in G, Op. 51, No. 4.
