Meet the Superintendent, State Test Scores Presentation

A note from the Syosset Board of Education

The board is pleased to invite the community to a welcome reception for our interim superintendent, Dr. Ronald Friedman.  The reception will be held in the South Woods lobby on Monday, September 23, at 7:15 pm, immediately prior to our 8:30 pm monthly board meeting.  We hope you can attend in order to personally meet Dr. Friedman.

September’s board meeting will include a presentation on recent test scores.  Staff will be presenting information about our district’s results on various assessments given to students last spring.  These assessments include Grades 3 through 8 English Language Arts and Mathematics and all Regents exams given in the secondary grades.  Also included will be a review of science assessments given in Grades 4 through 8.  In addition, staff will present a review of our high school students’ results in SAT and ACT exams over the past two years. Areas will be pointed out in which our students excel and also challenges we face in going forward.  This presentation will also include a frank and understandable discussion of the key issues about the state testing program that have been giving much anxiety to students, parents and staff alike, what some of these issues mean to us in real and concrete ways in Syosset, and how we are now dealing with and will continue to plan to deal with these issues.

The search process for a new superintendent has begun.  The Board met for an initial planning session on September 18 with our consulting firm, Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA).  A key step in this process is to identify characteristics that a successful candidate should possess for the district’s next superintendent.  The Board encourages the community to partake in the search process either through completion of an online survey or attendance at open forums/focus group sessions facilitated by an HYA associate. Further details and dates will follow for both forums and availability of online survey.

An RFP for public relations firms was completed.  Subsequent interviews with potential PR firms will be conducted in the next several weeks prior to the Board selecting a PR firm best suited to our district’s needs.

There is an ongoing RFP for architectural services with details to be furnished upon completion of the RFP process.
