National Honor Society Induction Ceremony at Syosset High School

Over 270 students were inducted into the National Honor Society at Tuesday night's ceremony.

The best and brightest of Syosset High School’s senior class were honored on Tuesday night at this year’s National Honor Society induction ceremony.

The ceremony was held in the auditorium at seven o’clock in the evening. Students filled half of the auditorium and were greeted by the school’s principal, Dr. John Durante, along with NHS officers from the class of 2012 and members of the board of education.

Durante gave a heartfelt speech about finding a career to be passionate about.

The National Honor Society recognizes students who are able to maintain a grade point average of at least a 90 and participate in two clubs each year in high school. It takes a lot of diligence and effort to get good grades and be an active member in extracurricular activities; this makes the number of students honored by NHS even more impressive.

The other officers of the National Honor Society, Roberta Lobo, Zachary Hammer, Madison Miller and Michael Stewart each read out descriptions of the four pillars of the National Honor Society: leadership, character, scholarship and service. A candle was lit to signify each pillar.

Finally, all 273 seniors were called up by name to the stage to receive their certificates, along with a National Honor Society pen. The students recited the National Honor Society pledge and were officially inducted into the society.

Syosset High School’s own chamber orchestra displayed their musical talents throughout the night, with a performance during the ceremony as well as at the start and conclusion of the evening.

Following the induction, a reception was held in the student lobby for students and parents. Cookies and beverages were served.

Katie Sparer was one inducted senior who attended the ceremony on Tuesday evening.

“It was really classy,” Sparer said.

“I’m really proud of myself and my peers for all of the hard work over the years that led us here.”
