No. 72: One-Stop for Smarter Students

Head over to Bagga Plaza and find the two places to make the most of your kids' cerebrum.

In our weekly countdown it's a no-brainer that you should send your children to and to get ahead.

At first you may be skeptical, but once you wrap your head around these unique approaches to expanding your child's noggin, you will be sold.

The entrance is flanked by and and as you ascend to the second floor, the first door you come to will be Power Brain Training Center (PBTC) - remove your shoes and enter with an open mind.

It is here within these walls that 90-minute classes take place daily from 4:30 until 6pm. School age children starting from age four to 15 are all welcome to take one class per week. Each session incorporates a five step mind-body system:

Step 1: Kids will learn yoga, martial arts, and various other physical exercises.

Step 2: From there they will attempt fun yet challenging drills focused on coordination. And when your kids get home and demonstrate one of these gesture games, you will find it challenging, too.

Step 3: After all that "gray matter" exercise, students will learn how to become centered and focused with breathing and relaxation techniques.

Step 4: Then comes visualization and guided imagery to improve communication, accessing both sides of the brain.

Step 5: The final stage is a compendium of all of the above to reinforce what was learned during the session so that students apply the methods of PBTC's philosophy to daily life.

At the end of every class, the children make sure to be supportive of each other with compliments and positive feedback, which in turn promotes good social development.

What makes this center uncommon is that it combines the best of two worlds; ancient Asian techniques with the latest findings from modern science. It is so much fun that kids will barely realize that they are expanding their minds.

Their mission is to boost focus, memory, self-esteem, and creativity.

In the summer they offer all-day camps and during the school year they hold their regular after school classes. Approximately every three months they have two-day leadership camps from 9am until 4pm.  Week-long camps are available during some holiday breaks.

Next up, head to the eastern wall of the shopping center and make your way to the lower level to Kumon, an after-school math and reading enrichment program.

Are you wondering where the word Kumon comes from? As a young father and teacher from Japan, Toru Kumon developed an instructional routine to help his son do better in school. His method of teaching was so successful that his son was able to do calculus by the time he was in sixth grade.

By the daily use of worksheets, guidance from the Kumon instructors, and consistent parental encouragement--all of which is geared to your child's specific needs--this international system of teaching has been able to help children achieve their fullest potential.

The recommended visits to the Kumon center is at least two afternoons per week. The remaining five days the worksheets are to be completed at home.

This linear style of education is shown to create independent learners and builds upon good study skills, work habits, and confidence. So, before the school year begins get a head start with your kids and check out these worthwhile learning centers.
