Photo: Baylis Celebrates Literacy Week

Baylis Elementary writes stories, hears favorites, and speaks with pros during Literacy Week.

students celebrated the joys of reading and writing in honor of Literacy Week. Classes wrote their own tales, heard favorites from former students and got some professional advice during the week-long celebration.

The week began with Baylis' past as students returned to their alma mater and read their own childhood favorites with younger students. Present-day Baylis kids wrote and shared their own stories from The Book That Baylis Wrote: Making our Choices Count Everyday. The original stories in their book illustrated the school's character education mission of making good decisions through patience, respect, integrity, dignity and empathy.

The future for these budding authors came in the form of a visit from Caldecott Award winning author and illustrator Jerry Pinkney. Administrators and community members also joined in the fun, sharing their favorites and reading to the children.
