Seniors Enjoy Thanksgiving Feast at Walt Whitman

Students at Walt Whitman Elementary School in Syosset welcomed senior citizens to the school on Nov. 25 for the annual Thanksgiving feast.

Students at Walt Whitman Elementary School in Syosset welcomed senior citizens to the school on Nov. 25 for the annual Thanksgiving feast. The feast, which is sponsored by the PTA and usually hosts between 80 and 100 seniors from local assisted living facilities and nursing homes, enables the school community to give back to others during the holiday season.

As each guest walked into the school, student council representatives from the third, fourth and fifth grade greeted them, gave them a handmade bead necklace and took a picture together. At the conclusion of the feast, all seniors received a picture frame made by the students with the photo inside.

Students also made Thanksgiving-themed placemats and napkin holders prior to the event. Guests enjoyed a full Thanksgiving dinner, including turkey, stuffing and several side dishes, courtesy of parents and several local businesses. Musical entertainment was provided by each grade level throughout the meal, with fifth-graders joining the seniors during their lunchtime.
