Syosset Students Flip for Charity

Syosset High School sponsors annual pancake dinner.

On Wednesday evening, ’s cafeteria was transformed into a party scene complete with music, cheerful banter and breakfast for dinner.

The high school hosted its third annual IHOP Pancake Dinner in the west cafeteria. For $7, each student received unlimited servings of pancakes, along with live music and an excuse to have some fun with friends.

This year, the event was sponsored by the Interact Club along with two other senior students in order to raise money for two charity organizations. The proceeds from the evening were split between the Gift of Life Foundation and Doc2Dock. While the Gift of Life Foundation helps people receive bone marrow transplants, Doc2Dock is an organization that supports patients in third world countries by collecting unused medical supplies and redistributing them.

Interact is a community service-based club at Syosset High School that boasts a very large student membership.

“This is the first year that Interact is partnering with both the Gift of Life Foundation and Doc2Dock,” reported Dani Kellner, a twelfth grade student and an officer of the club.

The pancakes were baked from IHOP’s signature batter and topped with maple syrup or a variety of other toppings. Those in attendance could also enter raffles to win prizes. While volunteers served breakfast for dinner, students had the opportunity to perform in front of their peers at the open microphone.

“I was looking forward to performing for the open mic,” remarked Joseph O’Malley, a student who attended the event and sang a medley of Weezer songs with friends Kavin Sanghavi and Ashwin Kelkar. “The pancakes were also really good.”
