Syosset Boys Lax Advances to Second Round

Win over Baldwin sends Braves to Hofstra next Wednesday night.

It didn't take too long for Syosset's boys lacrosse team to seize control of its first round playoff game against Baldwin at Syosset High School on Thursday. Tied 2-2 at the beginning of the second quarter, the Braves were looking to break through. Thanks to three quick goals by Ryan Hunter and a fourth by Doug Tesoriero, they did. The Braves had a 6-2 lead before four minutes had passed in the quarter.

Aside from momentary lapses, Syosset never looked back in route to an 11-6 win. The victory earns the Braves a second-round matchup at Hofstra on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. against No. 1 seed Farmingdale.

Hunter and Tesoriero were the offensive catalysts all afternoon. Tesoriero, a senior, netted the first goal of the game two minutes into the first quarter. Thirty seconds later, Hunter missed on an outstanding chance, jumping in front of the net and shooting just wide.

The Braves' defense was solid for most of the afternoon. Baldwin spent the majority of the first quarter inside their own offensive zone and only had two goals to show for it.

A game on the verge of becoming a blowout regained its playoff feel when two Baldwin goals cut the Braves lead to 6-4 midway through the second quarter. A third Tesoriero goal with four minutes to go in the first half sent the Braves into halftime with a 7-4 lead.

Tesoriero would score two more times in the second half, giving him five for the game. Hunter finished with three goals.

The Braves iced the game when Zachary Gropper found the net on a bounce shot with five minutes to go in the game. The goal increased the Syosset lead to 10-5.
