Syosset Boys Volleyball Maintains Streak

Close first game, but Braves still are perfect for the season.

It looked like the Syosset Braves' run of 12 consecutive winning sets was going to end on Monday at Syosset High School. But after being down by nine in the first set, the Braves boys volleyball team banded together and fought back, edging Oceanside 25-23 in the first set. Syosset took two more victories to increase the consecutive set number to 15 and, more importantly, keep its record perfect with a 25-23, 25-7, 25-10 win.

Records: Syosset 5-0 (4-0), Oceanside 0-5 (0-5)

Hero: Sam Gertler. When Gertler entered the servers box in the middle of the first set, things looked grim for the Braves. They trailed 19-12. When he left, the set was tied.

Turning Point: Nick Walsh served 16 consecutive points for a 19-3 lead in the second set. Walsh finished the day with seven kills and eight digs.

Key Stat: Alex Leiss led the Braves with 10 kills.

The Quote: "I really think it was the beginning of the week, and everyone was a little bit tired from it, but we jumped back. This team always pulls together. We have such great chemistry." – Co-captain Brett Burian on the first-set comeback.

Who's Next: Tuesday vs. East Meadow, 4:45 p.m. at Syosset High School.

Bottom Line: A big comeback was needed to keep Braves perfect, in more ways then one, in 2010.
