Syosset High School Evacuated Due to Asbestos

Classes and other activities canceled through April 7.

Syosset High School was evacuated Thursday morning due to a discovery of asbestos.

According to a school district press release, the head of facilities at the Syosset Central School District discovered asbestos planks by a Dumpster outside of the school, the result of a boiler room cleanup this morning. The substance was tested and confirmed to be asbestos.

Classes will be dismissed until Wednesday, April 7--spring break was already scheduled from March 29-April 6.  Students were dismissed by bus or their own transportation, and all after-school activities have also been canceled. Students who need to remain will be housed at South Woods Middle School through the end of the day.

An earlier report stated that the dismissal was due to an oil burner fire, and there was a noticeable stench throughout the high school grounds and particularly near an area roped off by police tape. When a Syosset Patch reporter approached he was forced to leave the property by school security personnel, who raised their arms to try to prevent him from taking photos.

The Syosset Fire Department was called in to check out the issue.

"The Syosset Fire Department was called to the High School this morning
to investigate a possible condition in the boiler room," a fire department spokesperson said in a statement. " No fire department action was required upon our arrival.  All further questions should be directed to the Syosset School District."
