Syosset PTA Battles the 'Rx Nightmare'

Wellness Committee of the Syosset Council of PTAs to present "Rx Nightmare," on Jan. 26 at Syosset High School.

After recent retaliation by legislators against the and several drug-driven tragedies on Long Island, the Syosset PTA is doing its part in securing students.

It is when students are in middle and high school that the foundations of drug abuse are laid. Consider the following findings from the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health:

1.6 percent of seventh and eighth graders binge drink. By the time those students are taking the SATs, that number jumps to 17 percent.

1.6 percent of students old enough to take the Math A Regents exam are taking prescription drugs. That number triples by the time they are taking the AP Calculus exam.

According to the LA Times, a person dies every 14 minutes of a preventable drug-related death.

It is because of these statistics that the Wellness Committee of the Syosset Council of PTAs will present "Rx Nightmare," on Jan. 26 at . The program, with guest speaker Steven Chassman, will take a look at the impacts drug and alcohol have on the family, friends and academic performance of the user. 

Chassman, a clinician and healthcare advocate, is part of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. His expertise in mental health conditions and substance abuse have made him a popular public speaker for Long Island schools.
