Syosset School Board Candidate: Susan Parker

Four candidates are vying for spots on the Syosset Board of Education.

Four candidates are seeking election to the Syosset Board of Education, competing for three empty seats.

The following was submitted by candidate Susan Parker:

Work
I received a BS in Marketing from Binghamton University, and an MBA from Boston University. For the last 7 years, I have worked as a Clerk for the Syosset Fire District. My position is the Assistant to the Secretary/Treasurer.

Do you have children in the district?
I’ve been a parent in the District for 21 years. My two oldest sons are graduates of Syosset High School as well as college. My youngest son is in 10th grade at Syosset High School.

How have you been involved in the Syosset School District?
I have been in numerous leadership positions over the last two decades in the PTAs of Willits Elementary School, HB Thompson Middle School, Syosset High School, and the Syosset Council of PTAs. I’ve chaired numerous committees, including Budget, Health, Safety and Ecology, By Laws, Community Service, Arts in Education, Audit, Ways and Means, and Reflections, among others. I am a Past President of Willits Elementary School and the Syosset Council of PTAs. I have been a member of the District Finance Committee; District Safety Committee; District Search/Interview Committees, and PTA/STA liaison Committee. I’ve attended the majority of the Board of Education meetings since 1992.

What will you do if elected?
If elected, I would like to find ways to reduce budget lines by renegotiating contracts, and examining actual expenses vs budget. I believe in open government and would do all I can to foster honest and open dialogue with the community we serve. As I both live and work in Syosset, I am extremely accessible, and have a pulse on the needs and the concerns of the  residents.

Final thoughts:
I bring both experience and an independent voice to the Board. I also bring much needed geographic diversity, as I live in an area currently unrepresented on the Board. I have a reputation for always being open and honest, and always acting with respect and integrity. I’ve developed a deep insight into the inner workings of our district, and spend countless hours advocating for our children and public education. I’ve always been a team player, but nothing comes before doing what is right and asking the hard questions of anyone in the room. As an independent voice, I will consistently vote in the best interests of the children and the taxpayers of our community.
