Syosset Schools Super Proposes $18M Capital Budget

Dr. Ronald Friedman presented an $18,041,044 proposed budget Monday for the 2014-2015 school year.

Syosset School Superintendent Dr. Ronald L. Friedman presented an $18,041,044 proposed budget Monday for the 2014-2015 school year.

The budget encompasses custodial/central services, district maintenance/grounds, security operations, debt service-TANs and interfund transfers. It represents a $437,585 increase from last year, or 2.43 percent.

$9,610,992 is proposed for custodial operations, with an increase from 2013-2014 due to contractual services and custodial supplies that reflect actual expenditure trends. The increase were partially offset by prior year staffing adjustments.

$3,434,270 is proposed for district maintenance/grounds, with a decrease from 2012-2013 due primarily to a decrease in a budgeted staff position through attrition and staffing adjustments that occurred in the 2013-2014 school year. Overall, contractual expenditures for maintenance services also experienced a decline. The decreases were partially offset by an increase in maintenance supplies.

$818,782 is proposed for security operations, with an increase due primarily to staffing adjustments including the addition of a part-time security aid for the high school. The district increased security in schools in the 2012-2013 school year and hired security guards for all school buildings. New locks were also added to all classroom doors. The budget for 2014-2015 reflects a continuation of these security measures.

$367,000 is proposed for debt service and $3,810,000 for interfund transfers. The change in the debt service code reflects preliminary estimates of anticipated interest rates.

The next budget meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 10.
