Syosset Softball Now 2-0 in Conference

Five-run third inning sparks win Wednesday.

After needing a four-run, seventh-inning rally to get a win in its conference opener Tuesday, Syosset softball was looking to salt away victory No. 2 a little quicker Wednesday.

Mission accomplished.

The Lady Braves exploded for five runs in the top of the third inning in a 5-1 win at Baldwin.

"Today was more the way I think things will be in conference," said Syosset coach Rich Powell, whose team continually left runners on base Tuesday at Oceanside before finally coming through. "We got some clutch hits. We still ran ourselves out of a couple of innings [later in the game] with misreads on hit-and-runs, but other than that there's not a lot of negative things to talk about today."

Syosset got the rally going thanks to the bottom of its order, as Victoria Savarese, Molly Goldfarb and Mallorie Sanchez had consecutive singles to load the bases. Ashley Freedman knocked in the first run on a fielder's choice, Goldfarb scored on a wild pitch, and Liz Jacobsohn's sacrifice fly plated the third. Singles by Cathy and Nicole Tang combined with some Baldwin defensive glitches put the other runs across before Baldwin finally got the third out.

Paula Janowski followed by Nivea Suresh eached struck out four in three innings of work before Danielle Zurek finished things off in the bottom of the seventh.

"It was good to jump out early," said Powell, who especially complimented Suresh for hitting her spots.

Savarese led Syosset with three hits.
