Willits Students Help Needy Families For Thanksgiving

Students filled food donation baskets and organized a "giving tree."

Members of the student council at A.P. Willits Elementary School recently sorted donated food items and assembled baskets to be donated to needy families this Thanksgiving.

After holding a school-wide food drive, which required that each class collect one specific item such as mashed potatoes, pie crusts or gravy, student council members ensured that each item was in each of the 17 baskets so that whoever receives it is fully prepared for the upcoming holiday.

During Open School Night, families at Willits purchased a leaf for the school’s giving tree. All of the money donated during the evening was used to purchase $25 King Kullen gift cards which will accompany the baskets, enabling families to purchase a turkey or other item to complete their holiday meal. The student council has been spearheading this project for the past 10 years.

The baskets and gift cards will be given to FEGS Health and Human Services System, which will distribute the baskets to economically disadvantaged families as well as those dealing with serious illness. By participating in the donation and basket preparation, students learned about giving to those in need, sharing, and motivating their classmates to bring in the necessary donation items.
