Syosset students in the Village Elementary School Orchestra took the top prize when, under the direction of Mrs. Linda Carrella, they performed at the annual NYSSMA Major Organization Festival at Hofstra University on Wednesday.
The performance provided students with the opportunity to hear comments from professionals other than their music teachers.
The orchestra prepared three pieces and was evaluated by expert adjudicators who are expert music educators from throughout New York State. The young musicians were assessed on tone, intonation, technique, accuracy, interpretation and other musical elements.
The adjudicators, who leave recorded comments and advice for improvement during the performance, seemed impressed impressed with the students.
"I can't believe I'm making these comments to a beginning string orchestra," one adjudicator said.
Students exhibited professionalism and expert musical ability well beyond their years.
