Diaz Shows Resolve, But Numbers Don't Add Up for Syosset Lax

Late comeback falls short and ends Braves' season.

John Diaz had that moment of redemption, the kind that generally fuels a comeback.

The Syosset freshman midfielder had two penalties that helped lead to a pair of Farmingdale goals, and the Dalers was cruising with a 5-1 lead in the third quarter of their Nassau County Class A lacrosse semifinal Wednesday night.

In the end it was Farmingdale advancing with a 9-4 win. But not before Diaz and the Braves showed some resolve.

Diaz rebounded from his early struggles, delivering a nifty pass to Nick Bruno for a goal that cut the deficit to 5-2 with 7:09 left in the third quarter. Syosset kept Farmingdale scoreless in the third quarter, then got goals from Ryan Hunter (off a feed from Bruno) and Zachary Gropper (unassisted) to cut the deficit to 5-4 with 10:20 left in the contest.

But Farmingdale would score the final four goals of the game. In the end the final score finally reflected some of the game's stats. The Braves finished with 27 shots, but only 11 of them were on net. And Farmingdale controlled the time of possession, thanks to a 41-22 ground ball advantage.
