Graham and Ross Lead Braves Bowling During Hot Streak

Walk down the Syosset High School athletic department halls on any given afternoon and you’re bound to find an abundance of athletes striving for greatness. Whether it be the swimmers in the pool or the wrestlers in the gym, they all are working towards the same goal - a championship. But one team that has the Braves athletic program thinking championship doesn’t practice inside the halls of Syosset High School.

The Syosset Braves , honing their craft at Farmingdale Lanes, may be the hottest team in the program. A 2-1 win over Conference III leading Farmingdale on Tuesday marked the sixth consecutive victory for the 6-2 Braves.

“We’re bowling the way I expected us to bowl,” Head coach Dean Strohmayer said. “We’re coming around and winning matches.”

After dropping the first two matches of the year, Syosset hasn’t lost. The success is in large part to the performances of and Kyle Ross.

Entering Tuesday’s match, Graham was averaging 209, nine points above the All-County threshold. Ross, one of the veterans of the squad, was averaging 196.5. He bolstered that number with a 686 series on Tuesday.

The hot streak has come at exactly the right time, with counties just a few weeks away.

“We’re going to have to bowl really well to win counties,” Strohmayer said. “We’re a long way from there. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Right now we just want to do well in our conference.”

Syosset trails Farmingdale by a half game in Conference III entering today’s match with Jericho.

Freshmen Have Sparked Our Lady of Mercy Basketball Turnaround

Our Lady of Mercy coach John Kiffel was all smiles after . No, it wasn’t because of the final result. It was because of the way his team competed with one of the better teams on Long Island.

It’s all part of a massive turnaround for a program that starts two freshmen, and Marilyn Lehmuller. Brady has handled the point guard effortlessly, battling tough competition in the Catholic League, while Lehmuller has excelled at almost every position on the court.

“Whatever I ask her to do, no matter how tough the assignment, she just smiles and attacks,” Kiffel said of Lehmuller.

The two are an integral part of a massive turnaround at Mercy. The team has already won seven games, four more than they won last year.

“There is a huge learning curve for them,” Kiffel said. “But they get better every day and will be important players for this team for the next four years. It’s a privilege to coach them.”

Mercy is in action again on Saturday when they visit East Islip at 12pm.
