The new year means crunch time for winter sports.

Indoor Track Led By Two Outstanding Performers

While Tuesday's practice was mostly composed of the standard training and conditioning drills, coach Chris Myers stood on the infield, beaming about two of his top athletes.

Brian Sheng and Michael Wilkins have both have outstanding seasons so far, as was expected. Sheng is ranked 7th in Nassau County in shot-put after throwing 42 feet, seven inches at Syosset's last meet. Wilkins ran 1.29 in the 600 meters, good for 4th in the county. He is also ranked 2nd in the county in the pole vault, reaching 11 ½ feet.

"Those two guys are our most outstanding performances right now at the county level,"  Myers said.

As for the rest of the team, the next month is all about preparing for the championship part of the season. Those meets will begin on Feb. 1 with the conference championships at St. Anthony's.

"Having a young team, we really just do a lot of training," Myers said. "Just train, train, train."

Boys Swim Team Ready For Big Month

Think last week's snow storm hampered the Syosset Braves ? Think again.

"We trained and had a great turnout over the break," coach Chris Schleider said. "We were in the water almost every day. After the blizzard, we were in the water the next day. The kids have been practicing straight through."

That preparation should pay off for Syosset in the coming weeks. The Braves are entering the roughest part of their schedule. After a 96-90 loss to Wantagh on Tuesday, the squad will face Manhasset, Massapequa, and Farmingdale in the next two weeks.

"Those meets are going to tell us a lot about where we stand in the conference," Schleider said.

Swimmers Edan Zitelny, Ashwin Kelkar, and Andy Lee have led the team through the early part of the season, but it has clearly been a team effort.

"The team's been practicing very well," Schleider said. "The work ethic has gone above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. Everything about it has been great."

The Braves hope the work will pay major dividends before the month is out.

Our Lady of Mercy Basketball Prime For An Exciting 2011

It's not even mid-January and the is one win away from matching its 2009/2010 conference win record.

The Mustangs, who went 3-13 in the tough CHSAA one year ago, improved to 2-3 with a win over 4-1 Kellenberg on Monday.

"The defense was the best we played all year," coach John Kiffel said.

Katie Wildes, who missed the first five weeks of the season with mono, is integrating herself back into the lineup. Wildes had 12 points and six rebounds in the Kellenberg win.

Because of the early season success, hopes for a special 2011 are high around the Mercy campus.
