Jon Wright is Having a Ball

Junior is bowling well at the right time for the Braves.

Jon Wright loves competition.

In the fall, the junior plays offensive and defensive line for the Syosset High School football team. In the spring, he’s seen playing outfield, third base, and catcher for the baseball team. But it’s during the winter when he participates in his favorite sport, bowling.

Wright doesn’t just like the sport; he’s quite good at it, too. During Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Plainview JFK, he shot a 647. The performance represented the continuation of a rapid second half turn-around.

“I was more in control, more relaxed,” Wright said. “I just felt good.”

A slump in the first half of the season drove Wright to invest in a new ball.

“It has more reaction time,” Wright said. “I’ve gotten more curve out of it. It just fit me a lot better than the other ball.”

Tuesday's match wasn't the only one that the new ball has paid dividends in. Wright shot a 602 during  - the series included a 216 in the third game.

The junior joined the bowling team in the eighth grade. Although he had never bowled on a competitive level, Wright instantly fell in love with the sport.

“It’s fun to be around the guys and around bowling,” Wright said. “It’s the sport I like best.”

Prior to Tuesday, the Braves hadn’t lost a match since Dec. 2. They are 7-3 this season.

“A lot of us didn’t do very well,” Wright said of Tuesday’s loss. “We know we can bowl a lot better than that.”

With the help of Wright and his new ball, the Braves should be primed for a good performance at the county championship.
