Syosset Baseball Association Title Games

Four champions were crowned Saturday.

* Ty Cohen pitched six strong innings, then put the game away with a two-run single in the top of the eighth as Valley Sports of Glen Cove won the Syosset Baseball Association juniors (seventh grade) title with an 8-4 win over Astoria Federal Savings.

T.J. Moranzoni put Valley Sports on top for good in the top of the third. With the game tied 2-2, he was caught in a rundown heading toward home, ran almost all the way back to third, then went back home and forced a throw that went over the the fielder's head.

Both teams were awarded first-place trophies after the game, as Astoria Federal Savings won the regular season title.

Jake Fogelman finished the game by striking out the side in the top of the sixth.

* The Berland brothers played key roles in Clark R.E.'s 12-8 win over Fairway in the AAA (fifth/sixth grade) title game.

John Berland went most of the way on the mound, while Brandon Berland got one of the key hits in a four-run fourth inning that helped break the game open. Clark R.E. would go on to score six more runs in the fifth, then had to survive a six-run Fairway explosion in its final at-bat to secure the title.

It was an especially stressful moment for the Clark R.E. side, as the team had blown a big lead to Fairway during the regular season.

* In the Single A (third grade) title game, Dynamics responded from an early deficit with a five-run fourth inning, then cruised to a 9-2 win over American Recycling.

William Vallone's base hit finally got Dynamics on the board. David Alongi put a ball in play that American Recycling couldn't handle to tie the game, and Hunter Ganz knocked in Alongi to give Dynamics the lead for good. Spencer Pugach knocked in two more to complete the inning.
