Syosset Boys Lax Beats Baldwin in Playoff Preview

The teams will meet in first-round action next Thursday.

In what turned out to be a playoff preview, the Syosset boys lacrosse team topped the Baldwin Bruins 6-3 at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park Thursday afternoon. The Braves will host Baldwin again next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (this time at Syosset High School) in the first round of the playoffs.

Syosset played solid defense in the first quarter, barely allowing a shot. Midway through the first, a Baldwin shot ricocheted off the goal post. This was the best chance of the quarter for the Bruins. Sophomore Ryan Hunter scored twice in the period to give the Braves a 2-0 advantage heading into the second.

Syosset goalie Jonathan Cohen recorded an outstanding save on a bounce shot early in the second quarter. The Bruins awoke with two quick goals, but the deadlock didn't last long--only a few seconds, to be exact.  Doug Tesoriero scored off the ensuing faceoff to give the Braves a 3-2 lead.

Baldwin tied the game just before halftime, but it was all Braves in the second half. Jared Godsell gave Syosset the lead for good in the third quarter. Doug Tesoriero netted his second of the afternoon late in the third and Rob Storrie put the game on ice with a goal in the fourth. Cohen was outstanding in net, shutting out the Bruins in the second half.
