Key loss: 1B Christina Jelonak

Outlook: Jelonak was the only senior on last year's team. With seven seniors this year to go with a bevy of youngsters, Powell has adopted the slogan "Strong Roots, New Hope."....Spirits are high, as was apparent during the team scrimmage Thursday that featured, among other things, the creative use of crime scene tape as accessories....Tang was an All-County selection last year, and Warfield nearly cleared the centerfield fence during the scrimmage. Powell says he's only seen three homers hit there during his tenure.

Quote: "Last year we took our lumps as far as pitching," Powell says. "We're still growing and learning about location as opposed to just throwing fastballs. If we can improve on that we'll be a contender."
