Syosset Softball Gets the Best of Baldwin

A big fourth inning pushes the Lady Braves to victory.

The fourth inning had arrived by the time the Syosset softball team found its swing against Baldwin Tuesday. But when the Lady Braves finally did they didn't let up, and the result was a 9-5 victory.

Second baseman Molly Goldfarb hit a single to deep left field to bring in shortstop Cathy Tang, making the score 2-0. This was followed up by two wild throwing errors from the Baldwin infield to bring in rightfielder Mallorie Sanchez--who was hit by a pitch--and Goldfarb to make the score 4-0. The next six Syosset batters singled, making the score 8-0.

In the bottom of the fifth the Lady Braves tacked on their final run after more errors from Baldwin. It started when Sanchez hit a routine groundball to the Bruins pitcher, who bobbled the catch and was not able to throw her out at first. The next batter, Nicole Navaretto, walked. Centerfielder Stephanie Perry grounded to the third baseman in what looked like a possible double play, but the ball got behind her, allowing Sanchez to score.

In the top of the sixth inning head coach Rich Powell put his substitutes into the game. Baldwin was able to capitalize somewhat, getting its first run after consecutive doubles to right and centerfield.

At 9-1 in the top of the seventh the Bruins went on a run. Pitcher Nivea Suresh, who put in an excellent performance, was replaced by Danielle Zurek. Zurek was able to strike out the next batter to end the game.
