Syosset Track and Field Performs Like Champions

Six Braves take first at Divisions; Boys lax get first round bye, while tennis wins first playoff match.

Boys Track and Field Jumps into Championship Mode

The Syosset boys track and field team began the spring season’s most important period with a bang.

Syosset sprinted to success during Monday’s Division Championships. It was, according to coach Bart Sessa, “a great day to be a Brave.”

Evan Kappatos capped his return to track and field the only way he knows how- by winning. The three-sport athlete won the division championship by throwing the Shot Put 46’6’’.

But he wasn’t the only one to find glory through the air. Junior Brian Sheng took the division title in discus, tossing it 130’3’. Kappatos finished in the top three in the event, giving him All-Division honors.

The Braves also won the 4X800 relay. Ross Knaster, Simon Nwana, Tyler Moritz, and Michael Wilkins made up the championship team.

The relay winners also won some individual honors. Nwana earned all division in the 800 meter run, posting a time of 2:05.1. Wilkins finished fifth in the pole vault and Knaster finished sixth in hurdles.

Nwana and Knaster were also part of the team that scored in the 4X400 relay team. Chase Kaye and Jatan Anand rounded out that squad.

“We had our best meet of the past few years,” Sessa said.

The Braves will compete in the Bulldog Invitational at Hewlett High School  Saturday. The Nassau County Championships are Tuesday and Wednesday in Cold Spring Harbor.

Braves Boys Lax Earns Bye

The Braves are going to Hofstra...and this year, they don’t have to win a game to get there. Thanks to a 7-3 conference record, Syosset is granted a bye in the first round of the Nassau County Class-A boys lacrosse playoffs.

"I think the bye gives us a chance to work on fundamentals, get a break, scout, and game plan better," coach John Calabria said.

Syosset will face the winner of Friday’s Baldwin/East Meadow match-up Tuesday at 2pm at Hofstra University. They beat both potential opponents in the regular season. A saw both Frank Buffalino and Ryan Hunter net three goals. Hunter also had a hat trick in a

Despite the regular season success, the Braves aren't taking anything for granted.

"I think it's very difficult to beat a team twice in the same season," Calabria said. "We will impress that upon our boys and be ready to go, both mentally and physically."

Braves Boys Tennis Wins in First Round of Playoffs

It may have taken four days, but the Syosset Braves boys tennis team finally got to play their opening match of the 2011 playoffs.

The Braves defeated Port Washington 7-0 on Thursday (it was originally set for Monday, but mother nature had other plans).

Captains Kevin Katz and Stephen Peng both won singles matches. Katz won 7-5, 6-3 and Peng won 6-4, 6-2.

Syosset will move on to play at top-seeded Hewlett next week. The official day and time were not known as of Thursday.
