Syosset Youth Lacrosse Report

Teams are building up some impressive records.

2nd Grade Boys Black

The second grade boys Black team won again on May 23 against a team from Levittown.  The game was close early on as both teams had a scoring chance.  The Braves finally scored in the first quarter with goals by John Harris and Hunter Pick to give the team a 2-0 lead going into the second period. Great teamwork in the second period led to goals by Harris, followed by goals from Gregory Burke and Logan Frain. The team closed out the scoring in the second half with goals by Cole Kirincich and Kevin McGann. Michael Ackerman led the team with three assists, while McGann, Pick and Joseph Terino each had one assist each. A strong defense was led by Antonio Bulzomi, Atharv Mehtani and Michael Castoro, helping goalie AJ Alexander hold Levittown to no goals for a 7-0 victory.

The 3rd grade boys team continued its winning streak with an impressive 7-1 win over Half Hallow Hills. Defense was the main story of this game. Matt Majoy, James Galvin, Daniel Shapiro, Ryan Lebson and Jacob Katz all played outstanding for the Braves. Jason Yacavone was great at goal in the first half, setting the tone for the Braves. Syosset midfielders Michael Anastasio, Troy Douglas, Charlie Zandieh and Eric Haas also did a great job on defense. The Syosset scoring was led by Andrew Giovinco with two goals at midfield. Jack Rooney also had two goals as a midfielder before he switched to goalie in the second half. Other Braves also contributed to the effort: Christian Lyons had one goal at middie and attack, Dylan Hein had one goal as a middie, Nick Hrelja had one goal at attack, Nicky Carchietta had one goal at middie, Matt Losquadro had one assist as an attackman and Jack Monfort had one assist as a middie.  The 3rd grade boys are now 6-1.

The 3rd/4th grade girls team had an incredible weekend, advancing their undefeated record to 9-0. They played two games this weekend and were unstoppable. Christine Mui celebrated her first career goal, with an assist from Paulina Levitan. Other goals were scored by Sofia Afkham, Meghan Balos, Rebecca Korn, Sara Krotz, Danni Pitta, Nicole Rizzo and Taylyn Stadler. A terrific job was done by Melissa Esswein, Jessica Levy, Rachel Kitagawa, Uma Alagappan, Kelsey Miller, Amelia Crapperatta, Betsy Stephenson, Riley Siebert and Lindsay Jacobsen with outstanding passing, catching and winning ground balls. Goaltenders Amanda Alejo, Eunice Kang and Lauren Tranchina played exceptional in both games. The entire team played aggressively and contributed to winning scores of 8-1 against Merrick and 9-4 against Franklin Square. The weekend was a great success for the Syosset Braves!

4th Grade Girls

The 4th grade girls team played a very competitive game against a tough team from Farmingdale on May 23.  If MVPs were awarded, one would undoubtedly go to goalie Amanda Alejo, who had 16 saves. The Braves had 11 shots on goal, but the Farmingdale goalie had a good game, too. Syosset's goals were scored by Taylyn Stadler (who had three with four shots on goal) plus Danielle Pitta and Reilly Siebert (each had one goal and two shots). Sophie Levinson and Betsy Stephenson both had assists and a shot on goal. Ellie Hooey, Rebecca Mackey (who added a shot on goal) and Camryn Smithwick showed good hustle all game long. Although they lost 9-5, the girls played hard and stayed focused throughout the game.

4th Grade Boys Black

The 4th grade boys Black team continued its stellar season with a 9-6 win over Hewlett last Sunday. The Braves received numerous contributions and saw some major improvements in their first-year players. Shawn Connell, Jake Mullin, Thomas Bruefach, Brandon Brosnahan, Dean Marx, Teddy Hanakis and Justin Cohen are all new players that made great plays and were integral in the Braves' victory. Liam Kalbacher and Tommy Rooney scored three goals, Dan Ochs had two goals and Thomas Goldrick added one goal to lead the Braves. They received a lot of help from Chris Belmonte, Sal Crescimmani, John Rochford, John Babino and Dylan Sapienza on the offensive end. The defense was tough, as usual, with Stephen Conte and Andrew Harris leading the way. The goaltending has been a really strong point for the Braves this year. Sean Anderson and Teddy Hanakis have split the last couple of games, and both are turning in tremendous efforts.  The 4th grade Black team improved to 6-1 on the season.

4th Grade Boys Red

The 4th grade boys Red team continued its winning ways with a convincing 7-1 win over Cold Spring Harbor. Sharpshooter Dylan Gefter had 2 goals and got things started early with a goal off an excellent feed from midfielder Dominic Speranza.  This was a harbinger of things to come, as the boys displayed amazing teamwork throughout, which led to all seven goals coming off assists. Game MVP Brandon Tabakin had three of those assists as he thrilled the crowd with his blazing speed, ground ball mastery and tenacious play all over the field. Chris Daugherty also displayed pinpoint passing, chipping in two assists of his own along with his usual strong play on face-offs. J.P.Lannig once again played steady on midfield, with two goals and one assist while getting great contributions from his fellow middies. Tough guy Griffen Berke, along with the always-improving Eli Feder and Brian Dillon, played well on their midfield shifts. Attackman Joseph Schindel ended the first half with a great goal off a perfect feed from Tabakin. Fellow attackmen Tommy Markou scored his first goal of the season after playing a half in goal.  Jake Needleman finished off the scoring with a laser shot from the left side that was a thing of beauty. As always, the defense dominated, starting with the 1-2 punch in goal of Markou and Tyler Parlo. Parlo once again pitched a shutout in his half of play that included some miraculous saves and great play on clears.  Austin Maccarone, Matthew Luneberg, Max Verch, Trevor Friedrich and J.T.Roselle all played stifling shutdown defense. They totally frustrated the Cold Spring Harbor boys with great teamwork, sliding to the open man and precision passing on clears. This was their best performance of the year. Thanks to Joe Lannig, photog extraordinaire, and first-time stat man Rob Gefter.

5th Grade Boys

The fifth grade boys squad hosted North Shore this past Sunday. After a string of tough losses, the boys worked hard all week and were looking forward to the game. In the first quarter Thomas Middendorf, David Moyett and Zack Tannenbaum all had scoring opportunities dashed by the North Shore goalie. The Braves midfielders, including Matty Benus and Chris Moon, provided help with ground balls and moving the ball up. After a penalty against the Braves late in the quarter, North Shore was able to score with a man up and the first quarter closed 1-0 in favor of the visitors. The second quarter saw the Braves held scoreless despite a ferocious attack by the offense with shots on goal by Jared Goldberg, Middendorf, Andrew Kravitz, Matt Farrell, Jack Lukakovic and Griffen Halpern. The North Shore squad was able to put one past goalie Jack Morre, who made five saves in the first half. The Braves came out firing again in the third quarter with Justin Carollo in the goal. Moyett, Goldberg, Halpern, Matt Korn and Siddarth Menon all kept the pressure on the North Shore defense with quick shots. Late in the third on a nice clear from William Sanchez, Tannenbaum was able to get behind the North Shore defense and scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to one at the end of the third. The boys' hopes for a comeback were dashed in the fourth when North Shore was able to take advantage of a cross checking penalty to take a 3-1 lead and hold on for the win despite a strong attack by the Braves offense.
