Reasons To Stay Cool

Syosset residents urged to take special care during the week's heat wave. Find out how.

When it’s this hot, it’s important for infants, children and the elderly to stay hydrated and cool – and out of the sun. The National Institutes of Health points out that those who are in the heat for too long can risk damaging their brains and other organs.

Drinking fluids is key to avoiding dehydration and preventing heat stroke, which can be life-threatening. North Shore-LIJ Health Systems, which has a location in Syosset, recommends drinking more fluids than you are losing, and drinking sports drinks to maintain electrolyte balance. And the National Institutions of Health also recommends avoiding drinks that contain alcohol. Other NIH tips include:

  • Limit use of the oven if you don’t have air conditioning.
  • Dress for the weather. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Shower, bathe or sponge off with cool water.
  • Cover windows with shades, blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day.
In addition, the City of Glen Cove has designated the Glen Cove Senior Center a "cooling center" through Friday.
