Severe Heat Wave Predicted Through Week

No end in sight; conditions can be dangerous.

Written by Joe Dowd.

If you've been out today, you know it's brutally hot. It can actually be dangerous.

The National Weather Service is predicting similar high temperatures for Long Island and much of the Northeast for the rest of the week. There is no end to it in the foreseeable future. Tuesday is expected to be about the same, or worse.

A heat advisory is in effect for Monday and Tuesday, meaning the temperatures combined with humidity can create dangerous conditions for some people.

The heat advisory began at noon Monday and will remain in effect until 8 p.m., according the NWS. Temperatures should approach the mid-90s. Combined with high humidity, the heat index values will be around 100 degrees.

The NWS warns that initial impacts of heat-related illness can be fatigue, sunstroke, muscle crams and heat exhaustion.

The antidote to those conditions include frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned places and plenty of fluids. Heat stroke is an emergency that warrants a call to 911, experts say. Sunscreen is a must.

The beaches and pools are open. Nassau County pools have extended their hours Monday. The pools at Cantiague Park, Christopher Morley Park, Nickerson Beach, North Woodmere, and Wantagh Park will be open until 8 p.m.

Oyster Bay pools are open as well.

It is also advisable to check on neighbors, particularly the elderly or infirm.
