Syosset 2013 Summer Camp Guide

With the warm weather on the way, now is the time to select a great summer program before they all fill up.

With a little less than four months left in the school year, local parents have already started planning for their kids’ summer vacation.

And that means one thing: Summer camp.

To help you decide, Syosset Patch has compiled this summer camp guide featuring a host of programs in town – and many others from nearby towns – to make the job of picking the one that’s right for your kids a much easier experience.

Brookville:

Name: LIU Post Youth Camps

Type of camp: variety/sports/performing arts

Cost:  Summer Day Camp: $450 - $2,360 until May 1, then $480 - $2,570; Performing Arts Academy: $1,600 till May 1, then $1,800.

Details:  LIU Post offers a one- to eight-week summer day camp for children ages 5 - 16, with children in age-specific groups. Activities include arts and crafts, computers, cooking, dance, drama, music, nature, sports and recreation, and swimming.  The Performing Arts Academy (ages 5 - 17) is a three-week program that challengers campers to perform in a full-sized band, concert choir or become part of the Glee club.

Name: LuHi Summer Programs

Type of camp: variety/arts/sports/

Cost: Prices start at $1,095 for two-weeks, vary by program

Where:  Long Island Lutheran High School, 131 Brookville Rd, Brookville

Details:  LuHi offers 30 summer programs over eight weeks that are divided into three catagories: All-Round programs (grades pre-kindergarten - 9) for children who want a mix of traditional outdoor camp activities, sports, crafts and more; Arts & Education (grades 2 - 12) for in-depth study of computer science, dance, forensics, theatre and performing arts, and visual arts; Sports Schools (grades 1 - 12, varies by sport) for beginner to advanced athletes from a multi-sport Rookie School and baseball to fencing.

Cold Spring Harbor:

Name: Camp Seahawk

Type of camp: variety/sports/crafts

Cost: $254 per session with Recreation ID/$350 without Recreation ID

Where: Cold Spring Harbor High School, 82 Turkey Lane, Cold Spring Harbor.

When: Three Sessions: June 24 - July 5, July 8 - 19, July 22 - Aug. 5

Deadline for registration: First-come, first-serve; space is limited.

Details: Town of Huntington runs a day camp in cooperation with Cold Spring Harbor School District for children entering grades 1 - 7 in September 2013. Activities will include arts and crafts, sports, special events, games, dances and computers.

Name: Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium

Type of camp: outdoors/nature/educational

Cost: Close Encounters of the Natural Kind: $20 per day, $65 per four days; Curious Naturalists: $70- $75; Field Explorers, Junior Biologists: $115 - $125; Turtle Trackers: $50-

60; Fly Fishing: $50-60.

Details: Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery offers a variety of short summer day programs for children entering kindergarten - 8th grade, with single-day programs for children up to 12th grade. Children are divided by age group: Close Encounters (kindergarten), Curious Naturalists (grades 1 - 2), Field Explorers (grades 3 - 5), Junior Biologists (6 - 8). Programs focus on learning about the environment through hands-on activities.

Locust Valley: 

Name: Friends Academy Summer Camps

Type of camp: variety/sports/arts/educational

Cost: General Camp: $4,575 - $6,895; Mini-Day: $4,125 - $6,225; The Academy: $3,800 - $6,695; Counselor-in-Training Program: $2,750 - $4,850.

Where: Friends Academy, 250 Duck Pond Road, Locust Valley.

When: June 24 - Aug. 16, closed July 4.

Details:  Friends Academy offers four summer programs for children in entering nursery school through age 15: General Camp (grades nursery - 2), Mini-Day (nursery -  kindergarten), The Academy (grades 3 - 8) and Counselor in Training (ages 14 - 15). General Camp offers diverse activities focusing on arts and sports while The Academy gives older children a chance to focus in one of 17 sports and athletic programs, 8 arts/computer/academic programs, or three adventure/travel programs.

Oyster Bay:

Name: Theodore Roosevelt Audubon Center Nature Day Camp

Type of camp: outdoors/nature/ educational

Cost:  $295 - $435 per week for members, $335 - $475 per week for non-members. Conservationists in Training: $225 per week.

Where:  Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center, 134 Cove Road, Oyster Bay.

When: June 24 - Aug. 29

Deadline for registration:  $35 early bird discount before May 15.

Details:  The nature center offers a 10-week summer program for children to explore and learn about nature. Children are divided by age groups: Chickadees (ages 4 - 6), Blue Jays (ages 7 - 9), Eagles (ages 10 - 12), Conservationists in Training (ages 13 - 17). Themes include “Nature Mythbusters” to “The Great Outdoors S`mores.” Special overnight trips are offered for pre-teens and teens.

Name: Boys & Girls Club

Type of camp:  variety/sports/arts and crafts

Cost:  Grades K - 3: $225 - $265 per week, Grades 4 - 10: $250 - $295 per week. Extended Care: $40 per week.

Where:  Boys & Girls Club, 1 Pine Hollow Road, Oyster Bay.

When: June 24 - Aug. 23

Deadline for registration: Ongoing Registration.

Details:  The Boys & Girls Club runs a nine-week summer day camp program for children entering kindergarten to tenth grade. Activities will include swimming, sports, arts and crafts and games. Child must be a Boy & Girls Club member to sign up for camp.

Details:  The Waterfront Center offers summer day camp programs for children entering grades 1 - 12 focused on the water where children explore marine life while learning to sail, kayak and more. There are Marinelife and Sailing programs which offer the chance to explore marine wildlife, versus Sailing programs that teach sailing skills and techniques.

Name: Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program

Type of camp: outdoors/variety/sports

Cost: $200 first child, $275 for two children, $75 for each additional child in the same family

Where: Theodore Roosevelt Park, West End Ave., Oyster Bay.

When: July 1 - Aug. 9, closed July 4.

Deadline for registration: June 14

Details: The Town of Oyster Bay offers a summer recreation program for children ages 4 - 12 at town parks and beaches. Activities include sports, games, field trips, shows and even the 34th Annual Tobay Games. The day is divided into morning session, 9:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. and afternoon session, 12:45 p.m. - 3 p.m. No supervision is provided for lunch between 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. so parents must  make arrangements. Visit the town’s website for five other locations.

Roslyn:

Name: Buckley Country Day Camp

Type of camp: variety/outdoors/sports/crafts

Cost: Mini-Day Program (nursery school): $1,290 - $3,615; Mini-Day Program (nursery - kindergarten): $2,150 - $6,025; Full-Day Program: $2,695 -  $7,245; CIT Program: $1,350 -  $3,625.

Details: Buckley Country Day Camp offer two- to eight-week programs for children entering nursery school to 11th grade.  Programs offered vary by age: Mini-Day Program (nursery - kindergarten),Full-Day Program (grades pre-kindergarten - 9), Counselor in Training (grades 10 - 11). Activities includes sports and athletics, arts, swimming instruction, enrichment activities, outdoor adventures and special events.

Details: Greentrees offers an 8-week  Day Camp program for children ages 2 - 8. The camp activities will include swimming, dance,music, theater, arts and crafts, non-competitive sports and games, and traditional outdoor cookout.

Details: M.A.T.S.S. Kids’ Gym offers summer program for children ages 2 - 10. Daily activities include daily arts and crafts, music and movement, and playtime in indoor gyms. There are field trips for children ages 5 and older. Specialized weekly themes are available for children age 7 and older, theme may include magic or cooking.
