Syosset High School Hosts 23rd Annual Senior Citizen Prom

The prom took place on Friday, May 20 at Syosset High School.

Senior prom is one of those quintessential teenage experiences that people tend to remember for a lifetime. But who says you have to be in high school to have some fun?

Future Leaders of America hosted its 23rd annual Senior Citizen Prom on Friday, May 20 to prove that you’re never too old to go to prom.

Senior citizens from the local Syosset/Woodbury region, along with adults from the Cold Spring Hills Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, were invited to attend an afternoon of dancing and fun at Syosset High School. Students from the Future Leaders of America community service club decorated the auxiliary gym in accordance with the “Love Boat” theme. Students dressed up like sailors and spent quality time with the elderly of the community.

To the delight of the guests, various musical groups from the school performed at the prom. Members of the Wind Ensemble played some lively jazz music; afterwards the girls’ acapella group, the Adelettes, serenaded the party. Many of the seniors danced the day away, teaching their moves to the teens who danced with them. Students served lunch and dessert, and even baked some of the goodies themselves in the Bake Shop classes offered at SHS.

Bette Seltzer was one senior citizen who enjoyed herself immensely at the prom.

“I appreciate that Syosset High School sponsors an adult senior prom," Seltzer said. "I think it’s wonderful and teaches young people civic responsibility, which they will carry with them for a lifetime.”

Pat Gebhard also commended the high school for its spectacular event.

“The senior prom shows great respect for the senior citizens," Gebhard said. "It is a credit to the school and my hat goes off the students.”

The Senior Citizen Prom rekindled memories of high school for many of the elderly members of the town. This successful event will continue for many years to come.
