'Heart & Sole' 5-K to Benefit Syosset Hospital Scholarship

9th annual "Heart & Sole" 5-K Run/Walk begins and ends at Plainview Middle School July 22.

Runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes from all over Long Island and beyond  are invited to come to Plainview on Sunday morning, July 22, for the 9th annual edition of the Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run/Walk.

The event will once again start and finish at the on Central Park Road and Southern Parkway in Plainview, starting at 9 a.m.

The net proceeds of the 2012 event will benefit the and Plainview Hospital Scholarship Fund for local students considering a career in a medically related field, and the establishment of patient and family education resource centers at both Plainview and Syosset Hospitals.

Dr. Alan Mensch, Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs for Plainview and Syosset Hospitals and a long time member of the will serve as the Chairman of the event, and Ric & Kathy DiVeglio will be in charge of the GLIRC logistical effort.

The run will be continuing the tradition, inaugurated in 2010, of a quarter mile Fun Run for the youngsters on the Middle School track immediately prior to the 5K, with the theme of fighting the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.

The growing list of key sponsors already includes Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation, Huntington Hills Center for Health and Rehabilitation, Syosset Dentist Dr. Howard Matt, Central Island Health Care, Medical Arts Radiology, & the Medical Staffs of Plainview & Syosset Hospitals.

The event features a flat, fast USA Track & Field certified course, awards three deep in five year age groups, snazzy “technical” shirts for all entrants, ample post-race refreshments, generous post-race door prizes – all the trimmings for a great morning of summer running fun on the roads of Plainview.
