Volunteers Prep Public Garden for Memorial Day

Veteran's Memorial garden gets a little TLC from residents Saturday.

Volunteers with Residents for a More Beautiful Syosset were up bright and early to plant impatiens, begonia, and dusty miller in the Veteran’s Memorial garden on the corner of Jackson Avenue and Underhill Boulevard Saturday morning.

The group is sprucing up the garden in preparation for the annual Memorial Day Parade in two weeks.

“We think it’s a good way to bring together all ages and it fosters community spirit and pride,” said President Laura Schultz.

Residents for a More Beautiful Syosset has been tending the town’s community gardens since 1999 and is looking forward to revamping the plot across from after construction on Jackson Avenue is complete. They say the new garden will be longer and narrower, but just as lush as before.

“I think it shortens the long walk to and from the train station when you have something nice to look at as you go,” Volunteer Leslie Levy said.
