Music for 'Young Persons' And Adults, Too

Weekend happenings in the region.

This weekend’s planner includes everything from the “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra,” to a young person’s fashion show to improv musical comedy. Here are some of the highlights.

Cabaret singer Andrea Marcovicci, “The Queen of Cabaret,” will celebrate her 65th birthday Saturday, 8 p.m. at Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington. The concert, "Moonlight Cocktail," pays tribute to Mabel Mercer, Bobby Short and Billie Holiday whose songs made up the soundtrack of the period. Tickets range from $42-$52. Learn more. 

Opera lovers, take note. New York City’s Dicapo Opera Theater performs Giuseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto” at Tilles Center in Brookville. In Italian with English supertitles and performed with full orchestra. Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets from $43-$83. Learn more.

Long Island Youth Orchestra season-opener is Sunday, 2 p.m. at Tilles Center. The performance includes Benjamin Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra,” which highlights every section of the orchestra. Also on the program: Morton Gould’s Symphonette No. 2 “American” and Giuseppe Verdi ‘s Overture to “Nabucco,” tying in with the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth in 1813. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors and are available one hour prior to the concert in the Tilles Center lobby. Catch “Broadway's Next H!T Musical” Sunday, 3 p.m. at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center. The award-winning improv musical comedy features Deb Rabbai, Rob Schiffmann, Robert Z. Grant, Kobi Libii, Stefan Schick, Rebecca Vigil, host Greg Tiggs plus pianists Eric March, Andrew Resnick and Gary Adler.. Tickets: $25. The theater is located at 225-05 56th Avenue, in Bayside. Sunday marks the last day for the Designer Showhouse at Sands Point Preserve. Designer Sally Miller will hold a fashion and trunk show on Saturday with local young models in her couture designs taking to the runway in Castle Gould. The Fashion Show begins at 2:30 p.m. with local young models taking to the runway in couture clothing created by the designer.
