A Proper Funeral For Forgotten Veterans

A final tribute for unclaimed cremains is being offered by funeral directors and veterans groups at Long Island National Cemetery Saturday.

In some cases, the boxes containing the earthly remains of American war dead have sat on funeral parlor shelves for half a century.  Others were cremated and left behind for years, even decades. Some families just forgot about the remains or perhaps didn't know what to do with them, funeral directors speculate. In some cases, the veterans had no one left alive to return their ashes to the earth. Now they do. A broad coalition of Long Island funeral directors and veterans associations will provide a ceremonial farewell for about 60 of these fallen warriors in a solemn ceremony at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale on Saturday. Several of the veterans will be interred with their wives and, in one case, a son. The service begins…

Fallen Officers Honored at Nassau Police Memorial

Ceremony honored "Nassau's Finest" who made the supreme sacrifice.

Fallen Nassau County Police Department officers were honored during a solemn ceremony Thursday in Mineola.  Police and county officials recognized all deceased members of the department, which coincided with Police Week in Nassau County. The event featured a placement of floral tributes for all 32 NCPD members who made the supreme sacrifice. The Nassau County Police Memorial, which was first dedicated on May 12, 1982, features a massive stone monolith that displays two Bronze plaques. "These were the men and women you wanted as your friend, neighbor and most importantly police officers," said Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano during Thursday's memorial service, referring to those officers who were lost in the line of duty.   "It is my…

In fact, she gets so many encores that she says she has never had to advertise. "She is always at all the parties we had and my guest are always blown away by her presentation …

Poll: Most Dangerous School Zones

What are the most worrying roads and intersections near Syosset schools?

With the weather heating up and Memorial Day around the corner, Syosset and Woodbury children will be outside, flooding parks and walking or biking home from school. Although some schools are nestled in the back roads of town where cars rarely travel, others are on main roads where accidents are waiting to happen. Some parents have to worry more than others if their child is walking home from school or heading to afterschool hangouts in downtown Syosset or Woodbury Plaza. What school area do you think is the most dangerous for young pedestrians? Which areas are friendliest to young walkers? Are there areas where parents would never consider allowing their child to walk? Vote in the poll below and give us your thoughts in the comments!
