The future doesn't look bright for LIPA. Its bond rating outlook dropped from Stable to Negative onRead More Monday and investors are selling off at a large discount. LIPA hasn't even budgeted for cost of repairs from Irene ($170 Million) and only budgeted an additional $6 Million for 2012 storm repairs which will be 2-3 times Irene costs for Sandy (FEMA reimbursement 75%). LIPA's transition to the partnership with PSEG includes a largely status quo business model with minimal plans for storm preparedness, not the major overhaul and incremental conversion of its antiquated system to underground that is needed.

Yesterday, Nassau County paid farewell to one of its finest. By all accounts, Highway PatrolmanRead More Joseph Olivieri was a cop's cop who made his family, his friends and his beloved department proud. All to often in today's fast past world we loose sight of the dedicated, tireless and vigilant service preformed by Nassau County's Finest. All to often the inherent dangers of the job surface and there are times when even one of the Finest falls. Let us remember this good mans sacrifice and for his commitment to put the safety and security of others first. Rest in peace Officer Olivieri. May God Bless you and provide comfort to all those suffering by your passing.

You are supposed to move over when you see the lights as well.

Don't you conspiracy theorists think that a cops kid (Mr.Ryan) would be the one avioidingRead More prosecution if all these scary theories you say are true???????? Did you miss that in the article?? I do agree--the Escalade should be looked into--but how do you know it wasn't???? Leave the law to the professionals. The lawyers make it entertaining enough. A police officer was killed performing his duties. I can promise you any and every avenue was checked and double checked, especially because of an officers death.

Yes this absolutely REEKS of politics and cover up. Did the driver of the Cadillac escalade give aRead More blood sample?? Why not?? They killed a police officer after all. Oh wait, I forgot, there was someone in the vicinity with a BAC of .09 An easy target for political gain. An easy scapegoat to get the connected Cadillac driver off the hook. Maybe a fundraiser for mr Ryan's defense is in order. We can't allow witch hunters to prevail. Not in the 21st century. And a special investigation should be conducted to determine why the Cadillac Escalade is not being held accountable for their actions.

Rest in Peace Sister Jackie, My heart was broken when i learned the news of your passing. You were aRead More true inspiration to me at OLM Youth Group. You will never be forgotten and I am blessed to know you.

@IJCB: there is always a mad dash to get back to the bay after this annual event. I have a 30'Read More cruiser, and my experience is that the confluence of boat wakes, currents and darkness / low visibility can lead to some pretty hairy boat trim challenges on the passage back to home ports. This is especially true with heavy passenger loads; folks that may be moving around and shifting the load, too many people on the fly bridge, raising the center of gravity would make a boat even more unstable. Folks are always in a hurry to get home. The larger cruisers are relatively immune to the swells, but it's a particular challenge for the smaller craft near or over their safe passenger capacity. A prudent captain is aware of all these factors, and will take steps to mitigate the dangers. I feel sorry for all of the victims who suffered through this terrifing event.

Harold was an amazing part of my entire families life. He was a lover, best friend and so much moreRead More to my mother in the almost 20 years they spent together. He was the most amazing grandfather (grumpa) as she used to call him to my daughter, and she new him as nothing less in the 12 years they got to spend with each other. To my sister, I can't even answer for her the great relationship they had. But to me, he was everything. He made my mom, my daughter, and my sister so happy. He was always there for us, he always belived in us, he was more than a step-dad, he was an angel to us on earth and he will forever be one to us in heaven. I am honored to have had you as a second father, as a friend, and you are so missed but forever loved! Until we meet again, xxoo

Steve Jobs made getting stuff done easy, fun and insanely cool.
John Cocchiola October 6, 2011 at 01:58 pm
Steve Jobs was one of the great visionaries of our time, and he was kept alive this long thanks toRead More an organ transplant. It should serve as a reminder to fill out our donor cards. Who knows what people can accomplish in those extra years?

When I was about to buy my first computer, PCs had flickering letter and numbers. I didn't have aRead More clue as to how I might work it. But the little Mac had a device to make the icons 'do' things. This I could understand. That was almost 25 years ago. I've been devoted to Mac products since --- iMac, iPad, iPhone. Steve Jobs was an incredible visionary who changed the way we work, the way we think and the way we interact with each other.

Karol was the finest example of a true gentleman - a kind and gentle man. He was also one of theRead More most humble individuals to have walked this earth. We knew and loved Karol for more than twenty five years yet never had a clue of his heroism in WWII. Karol was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family and many friends will miss him greatly.
Papa Tom October 5, 2011 at 08:52 pm
My condolences to Karol's family. In 1991, Karol recounted many of of his childhood experiences inRead More Syosset for an oral history series I co-produced for the Syosset Public Library. I found him to be not only a great resource for Syosset history over the years, but a heck of a nice guy. He will be missed.

Dear Linda, Your article is a beautiful tribute to your mom. Let me add that she was also aRead More phenomenal friend. Always with a smile on her face, Mrs Manning also had an open-door policy with the neighbor kids. Ready with a hot bowl of soup to warm our shivering, snow-covered bodies in Winter, or lemonade and shade to cool us down when overheated in Summer. We were always welcome to spend the afternoons at the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park where she would drive us for fun-filled times at the pool, the park, and ice-skating. She was the best! --- Diana Sancetta

Thank you for such a wonderful article....My mom was an amazing woman and I am so proud of her manyRead More accomplishments. She was, also, simultaneously the Executive Director of Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council (TOBAY) when she was the Superintendent of the Town of Oyster Bay's Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA). She is sorely missed. Again, thank you so much for this great article. By the way, she was a WONDERFUL, adoring mother, too....May she rest in peace.
