Changed by 9/11: John Mulvey, Teacher

Syosset resident of more than 30 years reflects on the anniversary.

John Mulvey has been a resident of Syosset since 1974.

Mulvey, 74, was teaching a class in Jamaica, Queens the day the twin towers fell. He could visibly see the smoke from the towers.

A fellow teacher, sobbing, abruptly interrupted his class. She informed him of the attack, and Mulvey and the rest of the teachers ran to the nearest television set to follow the news.

Mulvey believes that the events of 9/11 are tremendously significant, which he said unfortunately led the country into unneccesary wars.

“It was a terrible tragedy, which led to two wars, that the U.S. should not be in,” Mulvey said. “Thousands of innocent soldiers and civilians are dying, and millions of taxpayer money has been spent.”
