DWI Rates High on Fourth of July

Did you witness drunk driving this Fourth of July?

Independence Day for most is all about fireworks, flags, barbecues and beach days. For the Nassau County Police, however, the Fourth of July is one of the worst days for DWI arrests of the year.

According to Newsday, there were over 100 DWI arrests in 2011 in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Statistically, only 2 percent of drunk drivers are caught and arrested, so this would mean there could be as many as 5,000 people getting into a car and driving under the influence on Long Island alone.

Until this technology, which is believed to be the future of driver safety as airbags once were, becomes standard, authorities maintain that reporting drunk driving and that being forceful by taking someone's keys are the best ways to prevent drunk driving.
