Sister Jackie Fund Gives Scholarships, Statues

Fund set up in September being used to help students further education.

One year after St. Edward the Confessor lost a beloved nun and friend, the Sister Jackie Memorial Fund has supplied education and more to parishioners.

St. Edward the Confessor Church announced that graduate Allegra Larrea received a $2,500 scholarship thanks to the memorial fund. She will attend Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Woodbury in the fall.

The scholarship is set to be awarded to more students from future graduating classes. But it's not the only lasting memory St. Ed's has established.

The fund has also helped commission a bronze sculpture of Mother Catherine McAuley for St. Edward's.

The memorial fund has raised $36,700 so far in honor of the nun who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run last year.

Father Tom Fusco thanked the community:

"As we mark the first anniversary of Sister Jackie's death, I want to take it as an opportunity to express my appreciation to everyone who has been so supportive and consoling this past year. Many people have been willing to share their Sister Jackie stories and memories - and that willingness has been a great source of consolation to me and to everyone who hears the stories."
