POLL: Komen and Planned Parenthood

Explosion of negative online reactions to Susan G. Komen for the Cure cutting funding for Planned Parenthood; Komen rescinds cuts, apologizes.

After an explosive online reaction to the announcement Wednesday that they would end funding, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure pledged Friday to restore relationships with Planned Parenthood.

News broke Monday about Komen's severing the ties, saying Planned Parenthood's current investigation by Congress violates new criteria for grant money. Planned Parenthood supporters shot back, pointing out that the investigation is lead by Representative Cliff Sterns (R-Fla.) and backed by anti-abortion groups.

News of the decision spread across social media and enraged supporters came out in support of Planned Parenthood. Even New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg pledged support in the form of "a $250,000 matching grant," according to the New York Times. Donations flooded into Planned Parenthood to "compensate for the $700,000 in Komen money that would have been cut."

While Planned Parenthood is the leading provider of abortions in the country, these procedures constitute approximately 3 percent of their services. Other services include cancer screening and prevention, sexually transmitted disease and infection testing and treatment, and contraception.
