Police ID Skateboarder Killed on Road
Bethpage teenager Oleksandr Safronov died after being struck on South Oyster Bay Road in Syosset.; second boy hospitalized.
A 15-year-old skateboarder from Bethpage died Sunday after being struck by a car on South Oyster Bay Road in Syosset, Nassau County police said.
Police have identified the victim as Oleksandr Safronov of Bethpage. He was skateboarding with a friend on the west shoulder of South Oyster Bay Road when he was hit by a blue 2002 Cheverolet Impala driving south, according to police. The impact threw Safronov into his friend, another 15-year-old.

Safronov, who experienced the full impact of the car, suffered a severe head injury and was pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m.
The incident occurred in the southbound lane of South Oyster Bay Road near Hicks Road at about 1:05 p.m. Sunday, police said. Traffic in the area was diverted for a time as the accident investigation continued.

Police said the second victim suffered a fractured ankle and is expected to recover.
The 32-year-old driver of the car has not been identified. No criminality is suspected, police said.
The Impala, whose passenger side windshield was shattered, has been impounded for safety inspections.
