New Details Emerge in LIE Accident
Three-car accident in HOV lane causes eastbound lane closures.
Two men were hospitalized after being involved in a three-car crash on the Long Island Expressway Thursday, according to Nassau County Police.
Emergency crews, including Syosset Fire Department, were called to the LIE near Exit 43 at about 11 a.m. Thursday, cops said.
According to detectives, an 83-year-old Brooklyn man stopped in the eastbound HOV lane after getting a flat tire. A car traveling behind him, driven by a 54-year-old Seaford man, collided with the stopped car, cops said.
The 83-year-old suffered "multiple traumas" as a result of the crash, cops said. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in serious condition, police reported.
A third car, driven by a 36-year-old Elmhurst man, collided with the second car, cops said. The 54-year-old man reported chest pains after the second collision, cops reported.
The 54-year-old in the second car was also hospitalized, but was later released after treatment for unknown injuries, police said.
The 36-year-old escaped the crash unharmed, police reported.
The first two cars were impounded at the scene for safety and brake checks, police said. No criminality is suspected at the time.
All eastbound lanes between Exits 43 and 44 on the LIE were closed for over two hours as crews secured the scene.
