Syosset School District is advising parents to watch for symptoms of viral meningitis after finding out a Syosset High School student contracted the illness.
According to their website, the district became aware of the student's illness Monday. The student has not been identified.

The district's message stated:
The Nassau County Department of Health advised that if anyone has the signs or symptoms, they should contact their health care provider... Please notify the school nurse if your child has any symptoms that are consistent with viral meningitis, or has recently been diagnosed.

The disease, which can be spread by person-to-person contact or via insects, is most commonly found in children, according to the New York Department of Health website.
