VIDEO: Nassau Lawmakers Take On Bullies

Nassau DA Kathleen Rice and Rep. Steve Israel fight for funding to combat bullying.

Nassau lawmakers called on Congress Tuesday to restore anti-bullying funds to schools. Rep. Steve Israel, D-Dix Hills, and Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice stood with students to challenge the recent changes made by Washington to funding for programs designed to combat the growing epidemic.

"Combating bullying truly takes a village," said Israel. "…it would be devastating to cut funds to programs that are working."

Rice defended such programs, like the Dignity for All Students Act which helps provide students with a safe haven from bullying, discrimination, and harassment.

Standing with Rice and Israel was Syosset counselor and teacher, Rich Faber, who stressed the importance of awareness as a way of changing the current culture.

"The Tyler Clemente case showed us the dangers of what happens with bullying," said Faber. "When it comes to awareness, we're looking to raise more awareness, not take away from it."

Students were encouraged to see the recently released documentary, "Bully," and were reminded of Rice's "STOP" program, an acronym for "Study the content; Think of others; Only send if appropriate; Photographs are forever."
