Syosset Presents 'Your Brain on Drugs'

Council of PTAs presents wellness program for parents and teens.

Syosset's Council of PTAs will present a wellness program Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at Syosset High School.

Dr. Stephen Dewey will present "Your Brain on Drugs" to give parents knowledge and confidence to guide children through adolescent years.

Dewey, a neuroscientist at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at North Shore LIJ, will explain the consequences of alcohol and drug use on brain functioning and development in adolescents.

Dewey's program will focus on hard drugs like heroin to common addictive substances, like caffeine. Teens, who may turn to caffeine as they head into their college years, will get a firsthand look at what energy drinks like Red Bull can do to their brains.

Students and parents will not only get an outline of the effects of various substances, but will also view PET scans of the brain while under the influence of those substances.

Representatives from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be on hand to provide information and answer any questions audience members may have.
